If you have inverted or flat nipples, Medela nipple formers can prepare them for breastfeeding and help your baby latch on.
If you have inverted or flat nipples, breastfeeding may be somewhat more difficult, but, of course, not impossible. Some babies have trouble latching on to flat nipples, which causes sore nipples. Additionally, an inverted or flat nipple may not reach the roof of the baby's mouth, which may make it impossible to activate the sucking reflex. However, remember that many women with these types of nipples do not have any problems when breastfeeding. In fact, you may notice that as your breasts change during pregnancy, your nipples begin to protrude more. But if this is not your case, you may want to use nipple formers.
Nipple shapers apply light pressure to the areola (the darker-colored circle of skin surrounding the nipple), which can help push a flat or inverted nipple outward. .
You can start using nipple formers during pregnancy, from 32 weeks. However, if you have a medical condition known as an incompetent (weakened) cervix or have been told that your baby may be premature, talk to your healthcare professional before using nipple formers, as stimulation of the nipples can cause contractions. Start by using the nipple formers for one hour a day and increase the duration until you reach approximately eight hours a day. If necessary, you can continue using them after delivery, between feedings (for a period of between 30 minutes and an hour before the next feeding). However, avoid using it at night to avoid developing nipple sensitivity.
Medela nipple formers are made up of two pieces: a flexible and soft silicone membrane, gentle on the skin, and an outer cup with holes at the top that allows circulation from the air, thus avoiding humidity. The shape of the outer cup has been optimized for a precise, comfortable fit, and has a discreet profile so it won't show through clothing. To use, follow these simple steps:
Place the silicone membrane on the cup and make sure it is well fixed around it.
After assembly, place the nipple former inside the bra, with the membrane opening centered over the nipple. The ventilation holes must face upwards.
While you use the nipple formers, the cup may collect some breast milk. Do not feed your baby this milk. Discard it when you clean the glasses (see below).
As with the rest of the breastfeeding accessories, you must keep the nipple formers clean. You must disinfect them before using them for the first time and once a day thereafter. This is a quick and easy task:
Likewise, it is important to clean the nipple formers after each use, separating the pieces and washing them with a mild detergent. Next, rinse them well with cold water and let them dry on a clean cloth.
